Willa Cather was born near Gore in 1873, in the Back Creek valley she later wrote back into her final novel. The valley still has that storybook look: creek bottoms, wooded ridges and old farmhouses set back from the road. Sunnyside Landscaping keeps lawns in this corner of western Frederick County, mowing and trimming as the long days of summer warm the valley. The name is well chosen for work that lives in the light, grass cut on a bright afternoon and edges trimmed so the shadows fall clean along the walk. In a place with a story like Gore's, a well-tended yard is a small, lovely chapter of its own.
