The Rappahannock splits the work in two: town on one bank, the long green slope up to Chatham on the other, and the Chatham Bridge stitching them together morning and night. AFM Landscaping & Irrigation crosses it in both halves of the year, mowing and trimming when the river runs low and warm under the sycamores, plowing and spreading salt when a February storm slides down the valley and the bridge deck glazes before the streets do. Winter here rarely announces itself; it arrives as rain that turns, quietly, sometime after midnight. That is the hour to be out with a blade, so a driveway is open and a walk is gritted before anybody needs them. Summer asks for something gentler, a level cut and a clean edge, with the concrete blown off before the truck pulls away.
