Cricket Excavating turns to snow work when the weather does — plowing long farm drives and gravel approaches, opening lots, pushing back the ridge the county truck leaves across the end of a driveway, and salting the slick spots where red clay holds the cold. A quarter-mile lane is its own problem; it needs a machine that can carry snow somewhere rather than shove it into a wall. The routes run through Forest and the open country around it, where the nearest neighbor may be a field away. The reward is simple enough — headlights at five in the morning finding a lane already open.
