Somewhere east of Exmore the fields give out into marsh grass and tidal guts, and the herons stand in the shallows at first light like they have all morning to decide. Blue Heron works the ground side of that landscape, mowing and trimming through the long Shore summer, edging walks, laying mulch, and hauling off cuttings and leaves once autumn finally arrives on a northeast wind. The seaside light out here is unforgiving and shows every missed corner, which is a fine reason not to miss any. In the rare weeks when snow makes it down the peninsula, the same hands turn to plowing driveways, clearing walkways and treating icy patches before the buses run. It is a narrow strip of land, and doing right by a neighbor's yard is not an abstraction here.
