East of Elkton the roads stop being flat in a hurry, climbing into hollows toward the boundary of Shenandoah National Park where drives run steep, curved and shaded enough to hold ice past noon. Clearing snow up there is its own kind of job: plowing narrow lanes, breaking out turnarounds so a vehicle has somewhere to point, shoveling steps and landings, and salting the pitched stretches that would otherwise send a car quietly backwards. Snow falls deeper on that side of town and leaves later than it does on the valley floor. The good feeling is a mountain drive opened top to bottom while the woods are still blue with early light.
