Curbside Leaf Removal

About Curbside Leaf Removal

By late November the maples along Elkton's streets have given up everything they had, and the first flurries come through on a gray wind off the mountains. Dawn is the working hour after that — plow trucks out on driveways and lots before the school buses, shovels on porch steps and front walks, salt down at the curb cuts where meltwater refreezes overnight. It is snow removal measured in whether a person can back out at seven and get on with the day. The town is small enough that the same drives get learned by heart, right down to which one hides a culvert under the gravel. Winter here is not long, but it arrives without much warning, and someone has to be up first.
