October along Route 220 turns the hayfields north of Daleville the color of a paper bag, and the mowing season starts bending toward leaf work and last cuts. Thompson Landscaping runs that turn every year — mowing, trimming, edging and fall cleanups through the tail of the season, then plowing and shoveling once Botetourt County trades color for cold. Between Troutville and Fincastle the ground rolls enough that snow lies unevenly, drifted in one lane and bare in the next, so a drive is worked until all of it is open, not most of it. Come April the same properties get their first cut and the whole year starts over. There is a rhythm to that, and it is a pleasure to keep.
