About Shoosmith Bros Inc

The hardest weather in this part of Virginia does not fall so much as it ticks — freezing drizzle on a windshield along Jefferson Davis Highway at four in the morning, the rail line glittering, every step outside its own small gamble. Shoosmith Bros Inc meets it with de-icer down ahead of the glaze and plows standing ready for the hour when sleet turns over into snow. Driveways get opened wide enough to back a truck out straight, steps and walkways get cleared and treated, and lots get pushed clean all the way to the curb line. Chester sits low on the coastal plain, where a storm can arrive as rain and leave as ice, so timing matters far more than depth ever does. Come the thaw there is a plain satisfaction in a morning when the highway was the only trouble anybody had.
