Seven in the morning near Bowers Hill, dew still heavy enough to soak your boots through, and the first mower of the day sounds like the only thing awake for a mile. Grass Roots starts early because Chesapeake summers turn punishing by noon and grass cuts better before the heat settles in. Weekly mowing, string trimming around every obstacle a yard can invent, edging along walks and driveways, then a full blow-down so nothing is left on the pavement. Fall shifts the work toward leaves and a last few cuts; spring starts the whole cycle over again. Straight lines across a wet lawn at sunrise are their own small reward.
