Frontier to Finish

About Frontier to Finish

Up past Free Union the road follows the Moormans River into Sugar Hollow, where the mountains close in and the last mile is always the hardest one. Snow that measures a couple of inches in town can double by the time it reaches those hollows, and a driveway up there is less a driveway than a small private road. Frontier to Finish clears that kind of ground around Charlottesville — plowing the length of it, opening the turnaround, shoveling the walk and steps, salting the pitch where a truck wants to slide. The work is not done at the mailbox; it is done at the door. When the hollow is white and silent and the lane is open, the morning belongs to whoever wants it.
