The Rivanna curls around the east side of Charlottesville under sycamore and river birch, and the neighborhoods above it, Belmont, Woolen Mills, the blocks off the Downtown Mall, hold some of the heaviest yard trees in the city. Cox's Tree Service works among them, pruning old oaks and poplars for structure and clearance, trimming limbs off porch roofs and alley wires, and removing what has failed at the trunk in a tight back yard. Piedmont storms build against the Blue Ridge and come through in the evening with real wind behind them, and the mornings after are for cutting down hangers and carrying brush out to the street. Every one of these lots has its own angle and its own gate to get through. Bringing a big tree out of a small yard without a mark left behind is the part worth being proud of.
