The first warm week of March in Chantilly is unmistakable: redbud coming up purple along the treelines, forsythia loose and yellow, lawns waking unevenly out of the gray. Spring Green works that turn in the calendar — feeding the fescue, cleaning out beds, mowing once the ground firms, aerating and overseeding to close the thin spots winter opened up. Northern Virginia grass lives on a knife edge between humid summers and freeze-thaw winters, so it gets attention from both directions. By late April a yard that looked patchy in February reads as one solid, even green from curb to back fence. Watching that change happen over a few weeks is the best part of the job.
