Owens Lawn Co.

About Owens Lawn Co.

September is when lawns in southwest Virginia get their real chance, with cool nights, warm soil, and fescue ready to come back from a hard August. Owens Lawn Co. works that window and the rest of the year with it, mowing on rotation, trimming and edging, overseeding thin ground, spreading mulch, and clearing leaves once the maples along the old Lee Highway start letting go. Cutting height goes up through the heat and back down when the weather breaks, because a lawn here answers to the season more than to habit. By late October the yards are thick and green while the ridges above them have gone gold and brown. That contrast, seen out a front window on a cold morning, is what a year's work is for.
