Capability Brown

About Capability Brown

Storms announce themselves over the Blue Ridge first — the ridgeline east of town goes soft and grey, and an hour later Berryville is white. Capability Brown watches that edge and starts plowing while the flakes are still fine and dry, because the second pass is always easier than the first. Driveways opened, turnarounds widened, walks cleared to the door, ice control laid on the stretches that never catch sun in January. The night runs long and finishes in that blue half-hour before sunrise. Clear ground, a mailbox you can reach, a car that goes where it is pointed.
