Route 1 runs through Ashland north to south, and on a snow night it becomes the loneliest and most useful road in Hanover County. Western Snowplows works those hours — headlights, falling flakes lit up like static, a parking lot getting its shape back one pass at a time. Plowing a lot is a kind of drafting: you decide where the piles will go before you push anything, and then you commit to it. Driveways get opened down to the pavement, walks get shoveled to their full width, and nobody arriving at dawn ever learns how quiet it was at three. That is the good part, honestly — the town waking up and simply going about its day.
