When a storm tracks up from the southwest it reaches the Route 50 corridor first, and the lots along I-395 fill in fast behind it. Interstate Snow Removal runs those nights — plowing parking areas and drive lanes, clearing sidewalks and entrances, stacking snow where it will not block an exit, salting ahead of the refreeze at three in the morning. Arlington's freeze-thaw is its own problem: melting all afternoon, glass by midnight, so a lot cleared once is a lot cleared twice. By daybreak the pavement is black and wet and the day opens on schedule. Driveways too, on the streets in between, because somebody still has to get out and go to work.
