By the middle of March, Annandale lawns wake up flat and matted, gray-green after four months under the weather, and the first cut of the year does more good than any other cut we make. We start right there: cleanup first, beds raked back to bare, then a low opening mow to rouse the turf and get light down to the crowns. After that it's the weekly turn — mowing, trimming, edging the walks and the driveway apron. Autumn closes the year with the leaves off and hauled away. Watching a Ravensworth yard go from matted to green over three weeks never gets old.
