Down where the land flattens toward the James, river fog lifts off the bottomland and the Blue Ridge stacks up behind Amherst in pale layers. Victory Lawn Works mows those low yards and the ones climbing back up toward town, cutting on a schedule the weather keeps rewriting. Trimming, edging and cleared clippings finish what the mower starts, and mulched beds hold their shape all summer. When October comes down off the ridge the leaf work begins in earnest and does not let up until the yards are bare and clean. There is a particular pride in a lawn that still looks kept in late November.
