Some winter mornings the whole Salt Lake Valley sits under a lid of inversion fog, and West Valley City's Granger neighborhoods disappear into a soft gray haze lit faintly from above by whatever moon happens to be up — which is exactly the hour Lunascapes LLC prefers for clearing a route. Headlights barely cut through that kind of fog, so the crew works these streets half by memory, knowing which driveway comes after which corner without needing to see the house number. Snow under an inversion behaves differently too, staying heavier and wetter than the dry powder from a clear cold snap, which means a slower pass and a careful eye on where it gets piled so it doesn't refreeze into a berm. There's something almost lunar about a fogged-in cul-de-sac in the small hours of the morning, streetlights haloed, everything muffled, the plow's own engine the loudest thing for blocks. Once the fog burns off toward midmorning and the valley reappears, the Granger streets already look like the storm passed through hours ago — which, underneath all that gray, it did.
