Tropic sits in the upper Paria Valley beneath the pink and orange rim of Bryce Canyon, a town that has lived for generations on water its settlers carried over the plateau by hand-dug ditch. Joe's Dirt Works handles lawn care here, where every patch of green is earned against the high-desert sun. In late spring, when the Tropic Ditch is running and the hoodoos above town catch fire in the morning light, newly mown grass looks almost impossible against all that stone. The craft is in the finish: a yard mown even, a tidy border along the walk, grass kept trim into the long golden evenings. The cliffs have stood here for ages; a tended yard below them is the town's own small reply.
