October reaches Taylorsville from the top down — snow on the high Wasatch first, then color running the length of the valley, then a week of wind that puts every leaf on the ground at once. The last mows of the year are the careful ones, height dropped a little at a time so the turf goes into dormancy neither shaggy nor scalped. Leaves come off the lawn and out of the rock beds and window wells, edges get cut clean one final time, and the yard is left tidy for the gray months ahead. Ground here is gravel under a thin skin of soil, which is why a lawn fed and aerated through the summer holds its color into a dry winter while a neglected one goes thin. A yard put to bed properly in October is half of next April's work already done.
