April arrives in this valley as water before it arrives as green — snowmelt off the Wasatch filling the canals and the old irrigation ditches that once watered farm ground where Taylorsville's streets now run. Lawns wake matted and gray from months under snow, so the first pass matters most: rake out the thatch and winter litter, aerate ground the frost has compacted, then a first cut low enough to bring the turf up. Fertilizing follows, and by mid-May a yard that looked finished in March is holding a deep even color again. From there it settles into a weekly rhythm of mowing, trimming, and edging that carries clear through October. Everything in the Salt Lake Valley starts with what the mountains send down; the craft is in meeting it early.
