Syracuse mornings come in off the lake with a little brine on the air, the Wasatch going pink above the rooftops while the causeway out to Antelope Island is still just a gray line on the water. Wilkins Landscaping likes those hours best, when the grass is heavy with dew and the mower lays down a clean dark stripe behind it. This was orchard and pasture ground not so long ago and it still grows like it, with the summer sun coming down hard and dry, so mowing height, feeding and aeration all carry real weight out here. The crew edges the drives and walks until the line is crisp enough to run a thumb along, trims the fence corners a mower can never reach, and carries the clippings off so the lawn is the only thing anyone notices. Come evening the light turns gold across the flats west of town, and a yard cut that morning still looks like somebody stood over it and cared.
