Sunset grew up out of old farmland, and the original section lines still show in the straight avenues running between here and Clearfield. When a storm comes through, frost gathers first in the low spots where the fields used to drain, and JP Vega Construction & Landscaping starts there, working driveways and walkways before the black ice can take hold. The plow runs the neighborhood loops while the shovel crew finishes the sidewalks by hand, block by block, until the whole route is clear for the morning commute. Ice gets salted at the mailbox clusters and the corners where kids wait for the bus, the spots where a slip actually costs someone something. Traffic picks up not long after, and the grid is already dry, the day's first plow lines melting quietly at the edges.
