Before Sandy was rooftops it was orchard land, terraced benches stepping down off the mountain where fruit trees once caught the morning sun. Those old terrace lines still shape a lot of yards on the upper bench, and IKON Landscape works them in winter the same way the land was worked in summer, bench by bench, clearing snow off drives and walks that step down at odd angles instead of running flat. Midday sun on fresh snow up there is bright enough to squint at, the whole bench glowing white above the valley floor. The crew clears each terrace level in turn, working with the grade instead of against it, so water has somewhere to go once things start to melt. It's a small daily reckoning with a piece of land that was shaped by orchards long before it was shaped by snowplows.
