Foothill Drive traces the east bench with the university on one side and open scrub on the other, and in a hard storm it's exposed enough that the wind can pile a drift across a driveway in under an hour. This crew knows the blade end of things in every direction — the mower deck that lines a summer lawn and the plow blade that clears the same driveway come January. They work the bench streets methodically, drift by drift, running a second pass wherever the wind has undone the first. A driveway scraped down to bare asphalt on a day that started white is its own small proof of the work. By evening, the wind usually eases and the cleared lines along Foothill Drive hold until morning.
