West of downtown, past the rail yards and the old warehouses of the Granary District, the commercial lots open up wide and flat and are usually the first ground crews claim before sunrise. This is where Command7 runs its routes, working through loading zones and long rows of parked delivery trucks while most of the city is still asleep. There's an order to it — lot by lot, dock by dock — that suits a business district built on freight and schedules. By the time the first shift trucks pull in, the asphalt is bare and the ice along the curb has been broken up and hauled off. It's unglamorous ground to clear, out where the trains still run, but somebody has to get there first.
