Up in the Avenues, where the streets climb in tight switchbacks past century-old brick homes, the maples that shade those sidewalks in July can drop real weight onto a walk once a heavy, wet snow moves in. This tree crew knows that ground the way most people know their own street, and in winter they turn their attention to the walk itself — narrow and steep, swept and salted so the climb to the corner store doesn't end in a fall. Evenings up there turn a particular blue once a storm clears, streetlamps coming on one by one against the snow. It's careful work on a grade that doesn't forgive carelessness, and they've made peace with that. By full dark, every driveway on the block has a clean path to the street.
