Roy was orchard country before it was rooftops, and here and there a few old apple and cherry trees still stand in backyards where a bigger grove used to run clear to the property line. Snow collects differently around those old trunks — a ring of bare ground close in where the canopy used to shed rain and shade, then the drift picking back up past the drip line. The newer streets built over the rest of the orchard ground are flat and straightforward, easy work, driveway to driveway down the street. But the lots that kept a tree or two need a slower pass, working the plow blade around the trunk instead of straight through, clearing the walk beneath bare branches that won't leaf out again for months. There's something worth noticing in that contrast, a town's old shape still showing through its new one every time it snows. By midmorning the street is clear, orchard remnants and all, ready for whatever the day brings next.
