Under the snow in Riverton, the old irrigation ditches still cut their lines across town, the same canals that watered alfalfa fields before the subdivisions arrived, and in winter their banks are usually the last strip of ground to hold onto frost. A driveway that backs up to one of those ditch banks catches cold air pooling off the frozen water, and the ice there forms thicker and lasts longer than anywhere else on the lot. Clearing it right means working past just the visible snow, breaking up that stubborn glaze along the low ground before it turns a walkway into a hazard. Most of the streets in town are ordinary suburban rows now, and those get a straightforward pass — driveway, walk, curb strip — but the properties along the old ditch lines need the extra attention. By the time the morning sun gets high enough to touch the canal banks directly, the driveways nearby are already clear, waiting on the frost to lose its grip on its own.
