The Jordan River runs the length of Riverton, cottonwoods bare and rimed along its banks by the time real winter sets in, and the streets nearest that river bottom seem to hold the cold a little longer than the rest of the valley. Plowing starts before the parkway trail sees its first walker, headlights sweeping driveways still dark against the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. The ground here used to be pasture before the subdivisions came, and some of the older lots still carry that open, low-lying feel — snow drifts differently against a split-rail fence than it does against a block wall. Clearing those long rural-style driveways takes a different pass than a standard suburban one, wider, slower, watching for the culvert at the end. By the time the sun's up over the Wasatch and catching the frost on the cottonwood branches, Riverton's driveways along the river bottoms are already scraped clean. It's satisfying work in a town still shaped like the farmland it used to be.
