Ogden Canyon opens right at the edge of the city, the Weber River running loud beneath the highway even in January, and the cold that pours out of that gap reaches the valley floor before any forecast does. Dayton Construction works from that end of town, running plows and loaders over driveways, lots, and access roads once a storm has come through. It's a construction company built for heavier ground work, and winter turns that same equipment toward keeping commercial lots and long residential drives passable across Ogden and up toward Eden and Huntsville. A parking lot scraped clean to the paint lines by seven in the morning is its own kind of finished job. Crews work the early hours when the canyon wind is sharpest, because that's when the ice sets hardest on asphalt.
