Midway wears its Swiss heritage in wood trim and flower boxes on buildings all along its main routes, a look the valley's dairy-farming settlers brought with them and never let go of, and every one of those buildings needs its walk cleared after a storm sweeps off Mount Timpanogos. An excavation crew working Heber Valley spends its summer on foundations and site grading for the horse properties and new builds spreading across the flat valley floor, ground that's rocky in places and soft with old lakebed silt in others. Then the cold arrives early here and lingers longer than it does in Salt Lake, and digging gives way almost entirely to plowing driveways, parking areas, and the long private lanes out to Midway's ranch properties. There's a certain rightness in a town this alpine-looking getting genuinely alpine winters, and in a business built to move both dirt and snow depending on the month. Midway keeps both sides of that work busy, one straight into the next.
