Drive the grid of Midvale's residential blocks in the last light of a fall evening and you'll see the pattern this town was built on, square lots, straight sidewalks, a lawn on every side of every house. A landscaping crew that works those blocks learns to read a small yard for what it can hold: a trimmed hedge here, a new bed of perennials there, edges kept sharp along a sidewalk barely wide enough for two.
