From the top of the pass the whole of Cache Valley opens at once: farms laid out in squares, towns strung along the foothills, the river bottoms running silver down the middle. Northern Utah Landscaping works that map — Logan first, then out to Smithfield, Hyde Park, Wellsville, Mendon and Hyrum, a loop of small towns that all want the same thing from a lawn. Mowing and trimming on a schedule, edges kept honest, feeding and weed control timed to a short and very bright growing season. Come October, when the geese go over low and the maples on the east side turn, it is leaves and cleanups until the ground gives up. Then the valley goes quiet and the mowers get put away clean.
