The Utah Olympic Oval sits right in Kearns, built for speed skaters chasing world records on real ice, and it's a strange kind of neighbor for a crew that spends its winters clearing the ordinary kind of ice off driveways a few blocks away — the same cold that keeps that indoor rink running keeps a Kearns street glazed well past sunrise some mornings. This crew tends yards through the growing months and swaps to plows and shovels once the valley's first hard freeze sets up, working the flat residential streets that fill most of Kearns between the oval and the rest of the valley. There's no bench or canyon here to shade one block differently than another, so a storm tends to ice the whole neighborhood at roughly the same rate, and the work is about covering ground rather than chasing shadows. By midmorning on a clear day the ice has usually let go on its own, but the hour before that is the one that matters, when a driveway can still catch someone off guard on the way to work. Clearing it early is a small, repeated job, done street after street through however many freezes a Kearns winter sends.
