Out past the edge of town toward Coral Pink Sand Dunes, a rare snow can lie across the orange sand for a day before the wind or the sun takes it back, a sight strange enough that half of Kanab drives out to see it — but back in town, the same storm just means a frozen lawn and an icy front walk. This crew spends most of the year keeping yards clear of the weeds and pests a high desert can grow just as readily as anything else, and takes on the same properties' snow when winter asks for it, clearing walks and driveways rather than dunes. Kanab's cold snaps tend to be short and sharp, gone in a few days, so the work here is more about the morning after a hard freeze than a long season of storms. A driveway iced overnight in the shadow of a house is a small, ordinary hazard, and clearing it before anyone backs out for work is the point of the job. By the time the dunes have shed their own brief white coat, the yards in town are already back to bare ground.
