Kanab Creek runs low and quiet most winters, but the cold that gathers along its banks at night creeps into the yards on the streets nearby, and a hard freeze there can leave a driveway glazed while the rest of town stays merely cold. This crew works those creekside properties along with the rest of their landscaping route, switching from mower to plow the same week the first real freeze of the season sets in. Main Street still carries its old movie-town storefronts under whatever snow the season brings, and a light fall here photographs better than it plows — thin enough that a shovel and a bag of ice melt do more good than a truck blade. Kanab winters are short and the ground rarely stays white more than a few days at a stretch, so the work is about staying ready for the next freeze more than digging in for a long one. Either way, a clear walk in front of a Main Street storefront or a creekside home is the same small job done right.
