When the gate closes on the Mirror Lake Highway for the winter, the mountains above Kamas keep making their own snow long after the road up to them stops being anyone's business, and it's the valley floor below — the ranch lanes, the driveways off the road to Oakley — that this crew spends the season keeping open. A storm off the peaks can drop a foot on the valley overnight, the kind of snow that piles against a barn door or buries a mailbox post, and the plow work here starts before the ranchers are out to feed. Kamas holds onto its snow far longer than the desert towns to the south — the valley sits high enough that a white field in March is still an ordinary sight — so the season runs long and the routes get plowed again and again. There's something almost pleasing about a ranch lane cut clean between two snowbanks taller than the truck, the kind of corridor that makes a working morning possible when the whole valley is buried.
