Down where Ivins sits in the Santa Clara River bottom, the cold pools at night just like the water does, and a driveway near the river can hold frost long after the higher ground above town has cleared. This crew, usually up in the branches of a windbreak gone brittle in a freeze, comes down to ground level when the ice does, clearing driveways and front walks along the river-bottom streets before the school run and the errands start. Ivins doesn't measure its winters in feet of snow the way a mountain valley does, but a black-ice morning along the river road is its own kind of hazard, and clearing it takes the same patience as bringing down a dead limb safely. By the time the light comes up over the red cliffs east of town, the walk is dry and the drive is clear, and the day gets to start on schedule.
