Big Green Thumb

About Big Green Thumb

Early on the Hurricane bench the light arrives sideways over the cliffs, and for about an hour every blade of grass throws its own small shadow. That is when Big Green Thumb likes to have the mower down — the first pass laid while the air is still cool enough to carry the smell of cut grass across a yard. This is lawn work on ground that only turned green because someone once walked water out along a ledge, and the job is done in that spirit: even cutting, patient trimming around posts and planters, clippings swept off the walk before anyone steps outside. By the time the valley goes bright and hot, the yard is finished and the trailer is loaded. It is a plain sort of pride, and it holds all week.
