Midday sun off the foothills can soften a morning's plowed snow just enough to refreeze hard once the shadow of the ridge comes back over the neighborhood by early afternoon, so a second, later pass keeps driveways from turning to sheet ice by evening. The crew works the curves of each cul-de-sac in order, moving outward from the turnaround toward the street.
