DL Dirtworks spends most of the year moving earth around Ephraim — grading a lot, cutting a driveway pad into the bench land below the San Pitch Mountains — and in winter the same equipment turns to moving snow off the ground it just finished shaping. Ephraim is a college town built of old limestone and newer additions, and its streets run in the long straight lines laid out by the pioneers who first farmed this end of Sanpete Valley. Storms come down off the mountains to the east fast enough that the crew often finishes grading a job in falling snow, blade still down from the last cut. Driveways here tend to be long and unpaved in patches, gravel under the snow instead of asphalt, which changes how a blade has to sit against the ground. It's heavy equipment doing a lighter job in the same valley it spends the rest of the year excavating.
