Cedar Valley's sagebrush still holds enough of its old self that a covey of quail will scatter across a half-finished street some mornings, right past a Yard Birds truck backed up to somebody's new garage. Moving day doesn't stop for a storm out here, and a driveway glazed with ice is the one thing that can turn a move into a liability faster than a heavy box, so the crew clears the path before the truck ramp ever comes down. They work the newer streets first, since those are the ones still getting move-in traffic, blading a lane wide enough for a truck and shoveling a walk wide enough for a couch. Once the ramp's down, they're just movers again, boxes up the walk they cleared an hour before. It's a two-part job that only makes sense in a city still filling in its empty lots.
