Centerville gets a wind off the canyon mouths above town that locals just call the east wind, strong enough some nights to rattle a fence and scour a parking lot clean of everything but a hard crust of pack. Bass Pavement runs its lots before that wind has a chance to do the job halfway — commercial lots along Highway 89 first, plowed and salted before the first shift opens up, because a lot half-cleared by wind is worse than one left alone. The crew knows the asphalt itself as well as the storms that hit it, having laid or patched a fair share of what they now plow every winter. Down toward the lake the wind carries snow sideways in sheets that never quite land where you'd expect, so routes get planned by where the wind is blowing that particular night, not just where the snow fell. Main Street traffic arrives to find the lots along it already down to bare, gritty pavement.
