By six in the morning downtown Cedar City is still cool, the theaters dark, the blocks along Main Street quiet enough to work in. Mow Cedar starts there in July, well ahead of the heat that stacks up by eleven — mowing, trimming, edging the narrow strips along walks and parking, then blowing the clippings back where they came from. A property cut and cleaned before the town is properly awake reads as effortless, which is exactly the point. The rest of the season brings fertilizing, weed control, and the cleanup once the leaves start to drop. Festival crowds fill these sidewalks all summer; the grass they walk past belongs to somebody's early morning.
