About Samara Company Llc, The

A samara is the little winged seed that spins down off a box elder or maple in the fall, and by the time winter's first real storm reaches Bountiful, the ones still caught in fence lines and gutters are usually buried under it. The Samara Company works evening routes through the quieter cul-de-sacs on the lower bench, clearing driveways after the day's meltwater has refrozen into the season's first real ice. Snow here tends to fall soft and spin the way those seeds do, catching in tree wells and along fence lines before it collects on the pavement itself. The crew works methodically, house to house, timing the pass so a driveway is clear before anyone needs to leave for a dinner or a late shift. By full dark, the cul-de-sacs they've covered sit quiet under fresh porch-light snow.
