Blanding climbs the foothills of the Blue Mountains at close to six thousand feet, high enough that the juniper flats around town — the 'cedars' the whole area takes its name from — hold frost long after the sun clears the ridge. Cedar Canyon Enterprises works those early hours, when the streets are still gray and the pinyon-juniper slopes above town are rimmed white. Snow up this high comes dry and settles into hard-packed sheets on driveways facing away from the sun, and clearing it means getting under it with a blade before foot traffic turns it to ice. The crew runs residential streets first, then out toward the edges of town where lots back up against open juniper country and the wind has nowhere to stop. It's quiet work at that elevation, the kind done while most of Blanding is still deciding whether to get out of bed.
