Whitehouse ends the way East Texas towns tend to end — no line at all, just lots getting wider until the mower is looking at open pasture and a run of barbed wire. From Patch to Pasture takes both halves of that: the trim front yard on a subdivision street and the acre-and-a-half out toward Troup where the grass is knee-high by June. Big mowing, string trimming along fences and gate posts, edging wherever there is concrete to edge, and clearing off what a season leaves behind. In late spring, when a rank field goes down in even passes and the fence row shows again, a property looks twice the size it did that morning.
