In July the crape myrtles along Stafford's streets go pink and white, and the Southwest Freeway hums behind it all like a river you can hear but never see. Chris's Southwest Landscapes works this stretch of Fort Bend County — landscaping and planting, bed design and mulch, shrub and hedge shaping, mowing and edging through a growing season that barely pauses to catch its breath. Gumbo clay underfoot holds water in a downpour and cracks open in a dry spell, so what goes in the ground has to be chosen for it.
